TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA — Obesity is a health problem that needs to be addressed immediately, one of which is through bariatric endoscopy therapy.
Senior Consultant for Advance Therapeutic Endoscopy at Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at MRCCC Siloam Hospitals Semanggi Doctor Rinaldi said,
Bariatric endoscopy can improve the quality of life of obese and fatty liver patients (those with dangerous accumulation of fat in the liver) into a healthier, more productive and balanced condition.
So how is it different from bariatric surgery?
He explained, in the bariatric surgery procedure, a surgical process was carried out and part of the gastric organs was cut, so that significant weight loss could be achieved, but the surgical procedure had a fairly high risk of complications.
Meanwhile, by performing bariatric endoscopy, obese patients with fatty liver will undergo minimal risk medical procedures because there is no surgery or surgery.

“This bariatric endoscopy procedure can be carried out simply in the endoscopy room. This action will also be very helpful in treating fatty liver, of which 80 percent are caused by obesity,” he said in a recent zoom event.
In addition, with bariatric endoscopy, it can also help cure the progression of chronic liver disease, GERD, coronary heart attacks, stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus (diabetes), as well as high blood pressure (hypertension) as well as respiratory obstruction while sleeping and prostate cancer in man.
Meanwhile, obese women are at risk of developing breast cancer and cervical cancer.
How is the Bariatric Endoscopy Process?
Bariatric endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure, performed using a special tool called an endoscope, which is in the form of a tube equipped with a flashlight and camera at the end.
Bariatric endoscopy uses a camera that is inserted through the mouth into the stomach to capture images inside the body.
The captured images will be displayed on a monitor screen so that the doctor can observe the internal organs or tissues in detail.
After confirming that the condition of the stomach is healthy, the doctor can continue the bariatric endoscopy process, namely shrinking the stomach without leaving no incisions because the procedure is carried out through the mouth (such as an endoscope examination).
In bariatric endoscopy, there are two methods known, namely Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) and Intragastric Balloon.
After the procedure, obese sufferers can adjust and rearrange their diet and stomach capacity efficiency in a better and balanced manner, resulting in significant weight loss.
“Continuing to focus on innovation and developing procedures that can minimize management and risks. This is none other than so that patients can feel more comfortable and safe while undergoing the action and healing process,” he said.
