From next year, companies that do not yet package their products completely sustainably will receive a discount on the collection and recycling of plastic that is not completely sustainable.
Now companies only get a discount if their packaging is completely environmentally friendly. But many producers and importers still find it difficult to meet all the requirements. That is why they will receive a little discount from January if their plastic packaging is slightly more sustainable.
Companies now receive a 26 cent discount per kilo of plastic if their packaging meets all sustainability requirements. This applies, for example, to packaging made from recycled plastic.
From January 2024, companies will receive a discount of 10 to 50 cents, depending on the requirements they meet. The more sustainable the packaging, the more discount the company receives.
With the discounts, the Waste Fund wants to reward companies for using increasingly sustainable materials, but also encourage companies to make packaging more environmentally friendly.
The government aims for a fully circular economy by 2050. The Netherlands must therefore use far fewer raw materials and use materials more economically. General director Hester Klein Lankhorst of the Waste Fund calls the discounts an important step towards a circular economy.
