Discord’s Plan to Switch to Temporary File Links to Block Malware Delivery

Discord will switch to temporary file links for its content delivery network by the end of this year. The company wants to prevent the spread of malware via the platform.

Discord told the editors of Bleeping Computer that in reality nothing will change for users who share files via the official Discord client. The file links that are shared between each other are automatically renewed. Developers would reportedly have to make some adjustments. The company says it will share more information soon.

According to Bleeping Computer the temporary links will be updated after 24 hours. The new URLs will be assigned some new parameters that will make it clear to Discord’s content delivery network whether or not a link has expired.

The company wants to ensure a more secure user experience with this change. According to Discord, the measure should ensure that less malware is spread via the platform. According to the editors of Bleeping Computer, various malicious actors on the internet are using Discord’s content delivery network to spread malware. Researchers from security company Trellix published this in October a report which shows that malicious state hackers are also increasingly using Discord to spread malware.
