Sony announces a partnership with Discord, where the app will become a voice chat option on the PlayStation Network.
Sony recently announced a partnership with a chat app focused on the game world, Discord. This form of collaboration brings Discord as a social tool built-in in the ecosystem PlayStation Network. This is a pretty surprising big step, considering that Discord had previously reportedly failed to agree on a bid acquisitions by Microsoft.
According to an announcement that Sony posted on its blog page, the partnership will make Discord an alternative chat infrastructure for anyone on Sony systems. Options such as “Start voice chat with Discord” will flag this partnership.
“Together, our team is working hard to connect Discord to your social and gaming experiences on the PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer to consoles and mobile devices from early next year, ”said PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan.
“Enables friends, groups and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily when playing games together.”
Ryan added that the partnership was marked by making a minority investment as part of a $ 100 million Discord Series H round. Meanwhile, the acquisition talks with Microsoft which failed to be valued at $ 10 billion. Apparently, the app would rather fly free with the IPO and try to become the dominant voice chat app everywhere, rather than being bought at a high value.
The Discord voice chat update on the PlayStation will come in 2022. This will probably coincide with a massive platform update on the long-term roadmap PS5.
