Disco Dolly and Bloemenbar Close After More Than 10 Years in Amsterdam’s Handboogstraat, Marking the End of an Era in the City’s Nightlife Scene

Yesterday was the very last Saturday that Disco Dolly and the Bloemenbar opened their doors in the Handboogstraat. The two entertainment venues were located next to each other for more than 10 years and have an illustrious history together. Co-owners Marlon Arfman and Steven Vermaas look back with a good feeling: “A lot started here, and that is what you prefer when you start a catering business.”

The end of 2023 also means the end of an era for visitors to “Het Straatje” this year. This weekend, friends, family, former colleagues and fans of Disco Dolly and the Bloemenbar came together for the last time.

Just like any place in the nightlife, Disco Dolly also has many stories. Not only on the dance floor or at the bar, toilet attendant Gerdien has also seen a lot in the ten years that she worked at Disco Dolly: “I once received a 90 euro tip in stages, but that was ultimately because he licked the toilet seats. ”

“Flower bar is iconic, a legendary place in Amsterdam”

Arfman speaks of a fantastic time, in which all kinds of things happened. “Only the night is the night, so doing night catering… I’m almost 40 now. I have two children. Steven also has a child. If you really want to do well, you always have to be there. And that’s just not possible. more.” Vermaas adds: “We are simply too old. We are passing on the baton.”

The Flower Bar opened its doors in 2011. Two years later, Disco Dolly opened next door, in the same building of the former Dansen bij Jansen.
