According to official data from the Nielsen SoundScan company, 373.9 million CDs were sold in America in 2009, or in other words, 12.7% less than the figure in the previous year 2008
Even more drastic is the comparison with the beginning of the century – during this period the sale of CDs decreased by as much as 50 percent. According to analysts, the main factors for this are the development of online piracy, as well as the increasing popularity of other types of entertainment such as video and computer games.
The best-selling name in 2009 logically turned out to be that of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson – fans bought 8.3 million of his discs. Second is the new country star Taylor Swift with 4.6 million, and third is the reissued discography of The Beatles with 3.3 million.
In terms of individual albums, however, Swift leads – her Fearless is the best-selling in the US, followed by the debut album of Britain’s Got Talent sensation Susan Boyle.
