The various stabbings last night in De Pijp have made a great impression on witnesses. One person was killed in the series of violent incidents, the suspected perpetrator was arrested by the police.

“I have to admit, I think it’s a unfortunate situation,” says an employee of a catering business in the Tweede van der Helststraat. “It could have just been someone I know. And it happened pretty close by. It’s a sad situation, I can admit.”
In total there were five people stabbed, one of them died on the spot. This happened just in front of the catering business in the Van der Helststraat. “You do not expect this one, two on a normal busy catering evening. You do not expect it. It is very shocking to experience something like this,” said an employee of the company.
He did not hear that during the stabbing, for example, there were shouts. “We were inside. The moment we stood outside, the gentleman was already unconscious.”
Motive unclear
The stabbings took place around 11.30 p.m. in the area around Ferdinand Bolstraat at five different locations. Shortly after the stabbing incidents, the police were able to arrest a 29-year-old man from Amstelveen. The motive is still unclear, the investigation team says it does not assume a terrorist motive at this time.
The police are conducting extensive investigations into the circumstances and are calling on witnesses to report. Four victims have been taken to hospital, their condition has not been announced.
Reaction triangle
The so-called triangle (municipality, police and justice) spoke last night about the stabbings in De Pijp. They express their condolences to the relatives of the fatal victim and wish the injured a speedy recovery. The municipality has announced that it will keep a close eye on sentiments and any unrest in De Pijp.
