Tariq Saani is one of 14 residents who lost their home in a large fire in Nittedal last night. The fire spread quickly in eight apartments in a terraced house. Saani was woken by the 19-year-old son, who smelled the fire. Neighbors helped each other to get people out of the apartments and to a safe place. Saani thanks the fire brigade, police and the neighborhood for their wonderful support and help. Show more

– It went so fast, it was very windy. I ran out without socks on, in sweatpants and a jacket. My son did too, says Saani.

It was his 19-year-old son who discovered the fire and woke him up. It started around 00:30 night to Friday, in a terraced house with eight apartments in Slattum terrace.

– He was awake, smelled it and woke me up. We didn’t have time to think, we ran out and were completely focused on what we could do, says Saani.

There were 14 residents in the row, among them both children and the elderly.

– Several neighbors came, and together we helped to get the others out. It was completely unreal, but today I feel it on my body.

One of the neighbors he met outside was Hege Gromsrud. She had woken up to a very vivid fire alarm.

– The dog barked like he has never done before, he went all “loco”. Then I heard a sound as if it was raining, but it was the crackling of the fire.

Gromsrud lives in the nearest neighboring house. While she was on the phone with the emergency centre, she heard a violent bang from the fire. When the fire service was notified, she ran out into the street.

– One of my neighbors was standing there putting on his shoes, and then it rang for the second time. It was like a gas tank exploding, the sound was so loud and the fire spread so fast.

The two ran to the apartments where Saani and her son also went from door to door.

The fire brigade arrived and the last resident was woken up by the fire crew. Everyone got out.

– The neighbor said that she put her feet in her boots and discovered afterwards that they were full of glass. No one had time for more than putting on their shoes and running out. It spread very quickly, says Gromsrud.

All eight apartments were completely damaged, only the house walls of the one end apartment remain.

As soon as all the residents were out and accounted for, it was time to go to the terraced house where Hege Gromsrud lives.

– They said that everyone had to get out, so then we had to run back to my building and wake everyone there too. The fire was not under control, the fire brigade thought it could spread quickly, she explains.

Eventually all the residents gathered in the neighborhood, when a married couple opened the doors and said they could come in to them.

– We should not have to stand outside and watch the homes burn down, they said. Many were in shock.

– It was a very nice couple who welcomed us. They were very, very helpful, says Saani, with an emphasis on very.

To VG, he brags about both the fire brigade, the police and the neighbourhood.

– It’s a plaster on the wound, that everyone was very helpful. I am very happy with the neighborhood, this shows that when something happens, everyone comes to it.

He has been back to the scene of the fire on Friday, and has seen that both floors of his apartment have been burnt down. Together with his son, he moved in half a year ago.

Those are the pictures he misses the most.

– It’s hard, because I’ve lost everything. But everyone got to safety, and that’s the most important thing. And we got support from the neighbours, says Saani.
