Disarmament and peace: “Stop the weapons”, the new mobilization against military spending

ROMA – It is the Campaign for the reduction of military spending in favor of health, education, the environment, solidarity and peace. It was presented today in Rome in a press conference at the Chamber of Deputies, which proposes the reduction of military spending and the shifting of the resources thus saved to more useful and urgent investments.

The promoters. The initiative is promoted by PerugiAssisi Foundation for the Culture of Peace, Greenpeace Italia, Italian Peace and Disarmament Network e Let’s get out of balance! intends to put the disproportionate expenditure on military structures and armaments in our country back at the center of the attention of Italian public opinion. It is intended to reveal to Italian citizens – with analyzes and information tools – the enormous figures of this “theft of the future”, with its negative impacts and highlighting how much, with this money, could be achieved in terms of social spending, peace and of development of the country.

The urgency of this issue. Global military spending has been growing for over two decades, as demonstrated by all the most reliable international data: a trend further strengthened in the last two and a half years following the war between Russia and Ukraine and the resumption of rhetoric and policies increasingly aligned with requests from the military-industrial-financial sector. “What was previously decided in less expensive terms, but with opacity and reticence – we read in a note released by the Campagna – today it is claimed: hence the enormous growth in the resources that states make available to the military sector, in particular with regard to the production and trade of new weapons systems”.
