LEHOBS BEACH, Delaware (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden said on Tuesday he was disappointed that Chinese President Xi Jinping would not attend a summit of G20 leaders in India.
“I’m disappointed … but I’m going to run into him,” Biden told reporters in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, without elaborating.
The Biden administration seeks to enhance relations with Asia. He will go to India to attend the G20 summit from the 7th to the 10th, and then visit Vietnam.
People familiar with the matter told Reuters that Xi Jinping would likely not attend the summit, which would be represented by Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Asked if he was looking forward to the trip, Biden replied: “Yes, I am.”
“I want a little more…coordination, I think they (India and Vietnam) both want a lot closer relationship with the US, and that could be very helpful.” Central News Agency (Translation)
