Rot-Weiss Essen traveled to Ulm confidently, but came back disillusioned. Because RWE deservedly lost 1:2.
Rot-Weiss Essen had a difficult task in the 3rd league against the previously strong newcomers SSV Ulm 1846. They have won 20 of the last 29 home games and have not had a defeat at home since March.
And RWE couldn’t worsen this record at 1:2 (0:1). Before the game, RWE coach Christoph Dabrowski made a change. Attacker Moussa Doumbouya slipped back into the starting line-up for Ron Berlinski. Captain Felix Bastians, who is healthy again, initially had to sit on the bench.
Dabrowski explained before kick-off: “I can fully identify with the way we have performed so far. But we need more efficiency in order to increase the yield.”
In Ulm we didn’t see any of this in the first 45 minutes. Nothing was moving forward at RWE. SSV Ulm 1846 showed how it’s done. The promoted team acted aggressively and purposefully before the break. The reward: 1-0 by Dennis Chessa. Essen’s first goal conceded after 542 minutes. After a foul by Vinko Sapina, there was a free kick that Chessa sank, but the Essen team’s deflection was unfortunate.
That didn’t change the fact that the lead that lasted at half-time was completely fine. Ulm was better and could have scored more goals. Ulm’s goalkeeper Christian Orta, on the other hand, never had to seriously intervene.
SSV Ulm: Ortag – Gaal, Reichert, Geyer – Allgeier, Ahrend (72. Jann), Brandt (84. Higl), – Rösch, Chessa (93. Yarbrough), Scienza (84. Ludwig) – Röser (72. Maier)
RWE: Golz – Wiegel (69. Vonic), Ríos Alonso, Götze, Brumme (69. Bastians) – Sapina, Harenbrock – Young (83. Voufack), Müsel, Obuz – Doumbouya (69. Berlinski)
Tore: 1:0 Chessa (19.). 2:0 Chessa (80.), 2:1 Sapina (86.)
Referee: Marc Philip Eckermann
After the change, RWE tried to show a different face. Because there was hardly anything going on in terms of play, standards had to be used. But overall they were completely weak.
Ulm withdrew more and more as the second half progressed, and RWE could hardly do anything with the following possession. The supposed decision came after Essen’s first good chance. Torben Müsel missed from 15 meters, but Chessa was there again in return.
But RWE didn’t give up and was rewarded. Shortly before the end, it was Vinko Sapina who scored from a distance to make it 1-2. But it shouldn’t be enough anymore. An equalizer would not have been deserved, Ulm were the deserved winners.
The reward for the next home win: Ulm climbed to second place, while RWE was brought back down to earth after their second defeat of the season.
RWE continues next Sunday (October 1st, 1:30 p.m.) against Dynamo Dresden. Ulm has to go to FC Ingolstadt on Saturday (September 30th, 2 p.m.).
