In the 3-0 defeat in Leverkusen, 1. FC Cologne had more of a chance than ever before under Steffen Baumgart. The billy goats’ disappointment was correspondingly great on Sunday afternoon. The GEISSBLOG collected the votes.

Martin Zenge reports from the BayArena

Steffen Baumgart

“I think everyone saw that it was a deserved victory for Leverkusen. This is a team that was superior to us in many areas – unfortunately, but that’s just how it is. They played it very well and always had good situations. In the end you have to say it so clearly: we were not able to stand up to such a good team. That definitely wasn’t enough to take anything away from here. We need points, what can I say. We have seven games and one point. I don’t have to explain every time that this is dangerous and an unpleasant situation for us – that’s just the way it is. In the end, only points will help us.”

Florian Kainz

“We played against a very good opponent today. Bayer Leverkusen were very confident on the ball. We tried to make the spaces narrow and the center. We worked well and had two chances to connect before the break. But they just have to go in. In the end, Marvin got us a few shots. It’s very disappointing because we invested a lot. But in the end it was a very clear defeat. Of course the situation is difficult. With one point at the bottom of the table, the situation is tense. We will continue to stand together and work hard, then we will be successful against Gladbach at home.”

Marvin Schwäbe

“We don’t need to talk about Leverkusen’s quality at the moment, they have enormous self-confidence. That makes it difficult as an opponent. Nevertheless, I don’t think we played as bad a game as we have in the past few weeks. Leverkusen has a top striker up front who can get things done, but they are also very variable. We will now prepare extremely well and hope that we can get the luck of the game against Gladbach on our side again. This is an absolute derby. We want to give something back to the fans. It’s about time for that. We don’t have to talk about the table situation, we know where we stand.”

Timo Hübers

“Leverkusen are not wrongly where they are right now. We’re coming out of a more difficult phase if you compare it to the last two games here in Leverkusen. We are not as far along as we have been in recent years – and Leverkusen is a lot further ahead. What are we missing? If I could narrow it down to one factor, I think I would be a coach or a player-coach. We have to find what makes us strong again.”

Thomas Kessler

“We completely deserved to lose the game. We started well and made life difficult for Leverkusen – but after the 1-0 lead, Leverkusen got into the playful flow that has characterized them this season. The boys tried to do everything they could to counteract it, but it wasn’t enough today. I think Leverkusen had a lot of motivation to make up for the last two games against us. We simply didn’t have enough to counter it.”

Xabi Alonso

“We are very happy, we played very well. We had a lot of chances and could have scored five or six goals. Things are going very well for us at the moment, but we have to stay calm. If we continue like this, we are on the way to having a good season – but it is still too early, we have seven games. It was a great performance, perhaps the best of the season. Today we can celebrate a derby victory.”
