For Fernando Alonso, an initially promising Canadian Grand Prix ended in a minor key. The Spaniard, who started second, had engine problems and later fell from seventh to ninth place due to a time penalty.
40-year-old Alonso took the time penalty for swinging on the straight in an attempt to keep Valtteri Bottas behind him. The two-time world champion had to take a risk, as he was struggling with hitches in his engine.
“As a result, I lost about eight tenths per lap on the straights”, sighed Alonso, who after his strong qualifying still had the hope that he could attack Max Verstappen.
“To make up for the lack of speed on the straights, I had to overcompensate in the corners. Moreover, we also had bad luck with the virtual safety car and the later safety car, both of which were unfavorable for us.”
According to Alonso, he could have fought for the podium places without the engine problems. “The positive thing is that we had a fast car this weekend. When I didn’t have the problems yet, I could quite easily keep Lewis (Hamilton, ed.) behind me in third place. Without those engine problems, I even had those unfavorable safety cars on.” finish the podium.”
Verstappen took his sixth win of the season in Canada after an exciting battle with number two Carlos Sainz. Lewis Hamilton completed the podium. The Formula 1 season will continue in two weeks with the Grand Prix of Great Britain.
