Disappointing was the news from the Police to Kerry Needham, the mother of little Ben who disappeared in 1991, at the age of 21 months, from Kos. The DNA sample of a Dane, who claimed to be her son, does not match Ben’s.
She declares herself determined to continue the research for her son, who would be 33 years old today. “I will never give up as long as I live,” he told the Mirror yesterday, Wednesday 4/9.
The Danish man claimed that his grandparents had told him that they took him from Kos and hid him for years. But the 51-year-old was wary as it was the third time this year someone had given their DNA. He explained how the stranger’s DNA samples were compared to what Kerry describes as “a little piece of Ben that is still alive”. The DNA was taken from the child when he went to a Boston hospital for the Guthrie test, which is done by pricking the heel and checks for possible disorders.
“There is always hope”
In July Kerry spent the 33rd anniversary of her son’s disappearance from Kos, waiting to find out if a stranger who had turned up could be Ben. But not even this time did the smile come to her lips.
“I knew in my gut it wasn’t him, but there’s always that hope, there’s always that possibility. It could be someone you don’t expect, it’s always possible. So that’s disappointing, obviously,” Kerry said. “We will not let this discourage us. We’re appealing for other people to come forward if they think anyone could be Ben,” he said.
He continued: “We will always take any information in confidence. We are always willing to DNA test anyone. The investigation continues. I will continue the search, I want to find my strength and hope again.”
