Hardly a day goes by in Hamm without any mention of pets running away or found in some Facebook groups. Even if it is meant well in case of doubt: They do not belong there!

Hamm – There is hardly anything worse for pet owners than when their own dog, cat or rabbit runs away from home. If the owner does not find his beloved pet straight away, the urban animal sanctuary is the first point of contact. It is more and more common, however, that found animals are taken home by private individuals and they try to find the owner of the animal via social media. What is meant nicely is still not the right way and can to Issues lead – for humans and animals.

“Who does this dog belong to? Found on the Dasbecker Weg. If you know the owners, please let me know! ”Was a recent example of a post on Facebook with a picture of a dog in the group of almost 40,000 members “Hammer help hammers”. The problem with this: What if the owner is not active on social media and he is looking for the animal in vain all the time? What if the animal is sick and in need of medicine? And what if the finder gives the animal food that the animal cannot tolerate?

Of course, it is always praiseworthy when you look after an animal that has run or found takes care. But taking it with you and posting the find online is not expedient due to the questions just mentioned. In view of the increasing number of such posts, the moderators of the group “Hammer help Hammer” had already pointed this out several times.

Found animals in Hamm: You can and should help anyway

But you can and should help anyway: with a phone call in the city Tierasyl. “The animal sanctuary is the only institution in Hamm that is responsible for these found animals!” Emphasizes city spokesman Lukas Huster and appeals to all those who find pets to always report there first. As a contact person for found and missing pets, the facility is there for you 365 days a year and around the clock On-call service occupied.

contacts

Anyone who finds a pet that is in need, injured or abandoned, reports this to the municipal authorities Tierasyl on the phone number 02381/3050121. Furthermore, contact can be established via the Zoo cash desk, Telephone 02381/503132. Local authorities can also help Security service (KOD) by phone at 02381/177235 and the police at 02381/9160. Anyone who misses their pet should also report to the animal sanctuary.

In the past year, the animal sanctuary took in 61 dogs and 159 cats that were handed in or reported there by private individuals. This means that there were fewer animals in 2020 than in 2019: the employees registered 74 dogs and 171 cats. In 2018 there were 99 dogs, but only 114 cats. In addition, there are found animals that were picked up by the fire brigade or the police: in 2020 there were eight animals, in 2019 nine and 2018 14. However, this also includes animals whose owners were taken to hospital and where no relative could be found who had the animal in Could have taken care of.

Found animals in Hamm: Most of them are picked up quickly

The nice thing about it: “As a rule, around 80 percent of the animals found are picked up again within a maximum of three days,” explains city spokesman Lukas Huster. Basically, owners have seven days to report to the animal asylum. If this does not happen and the animal is not picked up, they are allowed into the Mediation go – “whereby a legal owner still has the right to ‘surrender’ his animal for six months if he would report later,” said the city spokesman on the legal situation.

Also positive: “As a rule, all animals are conveyed.” With some dogs, however, it can take a little longer to be mediated if they prove to be more difficult due to their characteristics. What happens to pets that are not referred? “It is very rare that dogs cannot find a suitable home and that due to illnesses – usually age-related – they stay in the animal asylum until the last day,” said city spokesman Huster.

Stay away from wild animals!

In Hamm, too, cases of wild animals found keep appearing on social media, with which the finders want to help them and therefore take them home. Apart from the fact that taking wild animals with you is forbidden by law, the following applies in principle: “The general tenor is that you should keep your hands off wild animals – unless the animal is clearly and clearly injured,” explains city spokesman Lukas Huster. Only then can it be taken to a veterinarian who takes care of the animal (free of charge for the finder).

On the other hand, young birds that have fallen out of a nest should be left to their own devices, because: “As a rule, the parents are nearby and take care of the young and only stay away as long as the person is there.” Helpless or sick birds of prey and owls use the ABU in Bad Sassendorf as a rescue station (phone 02921/9698780). In special cases, however, nature conservation associations or the Hamm Environment Agency (phone: 177101) can provide information.
