“The Magician” has retired. Fabian O’Neill died on Sunday at the age of 49 in a hospital in Montevideo. The former Uruguayan international had suffered from alcohol problems for years and died of a digestive haemorrhage.
O’Neill left his native country in 1996 at the age of 23 to move to Italy and Cagliari, where he delighted fans with 136 caps. He had signed at Juventus four years later and has evolved considerably in the company of Zinedine Zidane. The Italian legend did not hesitate to qualify him as the best player he has ever played with. A silky playmaker, O’Neill also wore the Perugia shirt.

After being part of the adventure of the Uruguayan selection at the 2002 World Cup alongside Diego Forlan or Alvaro Recoba, even if an injury had prevented him from playing, Fabian O’Neill, 19 appearances for 2 goals, ended his career on following year at the National. Fallen into excesses, he didn’t know how to manage his life after football.
“Like Deschamps, Zidane knows how to win, but does he play well? So why change?”
