European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will discuss the current situation with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday afternoon.
–
European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier and his British counterpart David Frost announced the suspension of talks due to persistent “significant differences” over some issues in the evening.
–
Frost said on twitter that the reason for the interruption of the talks was the persistent disagreements over competition rules, dispute settlement supervision and fisheries. The negotiators therefore decided to inform their superiors of the current state of affairs.
–
The negotiating teams are under significant time pressure, as any agreement must be approved by parliaments by the end of the year. That is when the post -rexite transition period ends and Britain, which left the EU at the end of January this year, ceases to follow EU rules, leaves the EU internal market and the customs union. Unless the parties agree on another solution, tariffs and quotas will complicate trade across the English Channel from January.
–
Both Britain and the EU emphasize that it is better not to have an agreement in the end than an agreement that is not in their interests.
