Disabled Oil Tanker ‘Yannis P.’ to Be Towed into Port after Two Weeks in Baltic Sea

Status: 08/13/2023 7:32 p.m

Originally, the disabled oil tanker “Yannis P.” be towed into a port on Saturday. The tanker has been stuck in the Baltic Sea for more than two weeks due to damage to the engine.

The “Yannis P.” should now be brought to the sea area off Kaliningrad on Monday. The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) announced this on Sunday, citing the captain of the oil tanker. The new tug “Britoil 71” is meanwhile from Rotterdam at the “Yannis P.” arrived, as reported by NDR 1 Radio MV. As soon as the preparations on board have been completed, the towing connection between the two ships will be established and the tanker with almost 100,000 tons of crude oil on board can leave its position 20 kilometers north of Rügen after two weeks.

According to information from the WSV, the captains of the tanker and the tug decide on the exact time. The deep-sea tug “MSC Dragon” and the emergency tug “Bremen Fighter” are still nearby, the multi-purpose ship “Arkona” is on standby.

Checked suitability for towing

On Saturday experts from Barhöft were on board the “Yannis P.” gone. They should certify the shipowner’s insurance that the 274 meter long ship is suitable for towing. The tanker has a draft of almost 13 meters, which initially restricted the choice of possible ports of destination.

Emergency anchoring for almost two weeks

The “Yannis P.” was on the way from Russia to India. The reason for the so-called “emergency anchoring” is technical damage: a crankshaft bearing on the main engine is defective. Already last weekend there were plans to move the ship to a port. They were initially discarded because of the storm over the southern Baltic Sea at the beginning of the week.
