A solution to the issue of workers who are entitled to a disability pension and could not receive it until today, without having previously stopped their work, is provided by legislation proposed by the Minister of Labor and Social Security Niki Kerameos and Deputy Minister Panos Tsakloglou which was discussed today in the Plenary of the Parliament.
The Minister defended the provision in the Parliament, pointing out that “we are bringing about a significant positive change in the lives and everyday life of thousands of our fellow citizens with disabilities, with the aim of taking another important step in cultivating a collective mentality of substantial equality and opportunities for all”.
What changes with the new provision for the disability pension
The provision provides that, now, the insured of the e-E.F.K.A. they will be entitled to a main disability pension due to a common disease, without having to interrupt their employment, as was required until now.
“So in a few words the state posed a dilemma, work or state support?” And that, I would say, was the result of a twisted outdated notion that our disabled fellow citizens who could work should not receive government support. With the provision we propose today, this dilemma ends. ‘H one ‘H the other becomes BOTH one AND the other. And support from the state and work if they wish.”
In addition, the retroactive effect of the regulation is foreseen, from 1/1/2024. Those who have submitted pension applications since the beginning of the year, which have been rejected due to no previous interruption of their employment, will have to resubmit them within six months of the publication of the law, so that they will be reconsidered under the new regime.
Three initiatives for people with disabilities
The Minister then listed three recent important initiatives undertaken by the Ministry for people with disabilities:
First, recruitment of 740 doctors at the Disability Certification Centers, bringing the total number to 1254.
Secondly, expanding the list of irreversible diseases, with the aim of supporting and better serving the citizens.
Third, planning the overall upgrade of the operation of the Disability Certification Centers both in terms of the institutional framework and procedures, as well as in terms of staffing and digital and building infrastructures.
“We continue with our mind on the economy and development and our heart on society and people. Because we cannot achieve progress without social cohesion, stimulating employment with exclusions, expanding our human potential with stereotypes and prejudices. In our own Government, from our point of view, no one is left behind” emphasized Ms. Kerameos, closing her speech.
