When a Lidl customer in OC Bořislavka in Prague 6 wrote to us six months ago that she refused to put her shopping in the basket because it was heavily soiled, we initially thought she was exaggerating. We went to the store ourselves and found that the bins were really dirty. We noticed the same problem now, in the supermarket on Vinohradská street, the blue shopping baskets were even more repulsive.
People tend to go to the Lidl supermarket near the Želivského metro station for smaller purchases. The store has no parking and is located on a busy street. There is a hospital and a number of offices nearby.
Those who go for smaller purchases usually choose a blue basket on wheels. Finding one that doesn’t have a broken handle is often difficult.
We went to the store on Friday just after opening and immediately noticed a scrum at the aforementioned blue baskets.

No exaggeration? That was the first thought when a Lidl customer in OC Bořislavka in Prague 6 turned to the PrahaIN.cz server. She complained that the seller…
I won’t put my shopping there
People rummaged through them to find the one that wasn’t at least slightly shielded.
“That’s terrible, he can’t buy into it. I’m afraid to even take it out,” we heard the lady putting one of the baskets aside.
There was a rotten tomato in it. In another ice cream wrapper, the remains of chocolate smeared on the bottom. In another basket were countless papers, leaflets and packaging. In another, someone forgot a snotty tissue and a coffee cup. Even small carts for children were dirty.

We asked the lady if it was standard.
“It almost always is. People just throw it out there, leave it there and no one cleans it up. Normally I carry the shopping in my hands, but today I go for more things. I can’t imagine putting, for example, pastries or fresh fruit in the basket,” she told us.
We clean regularly
In the end, she took a classic big cart. These tend to be cleaner than smaller plastic ones.
Customers seem to confuse the baskets with trash cans, the store staff sighed.
It may also be related to the fact that Lidl some time ago canceled the classic waste bins for mixed waste and introduced bins for sorted waste, which are behind the cash registers. For some, it is easier to leave the leftovers in the basket.
The saleswoman at Lidl told us that she cleans the baskets regularly. However, we did not find out how regularly.
Regarding the frequency of washing, we also contacted the press department, but they did not send us their answer.
