The Dominican will receive the pitches from Gerrit Cole, who will open the game for the New York team against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The manager of New York Yankees, Aaron Boone, confirmed this Sunday that Gary Sanchez will be the team catcher on Opening Day of the 2021 season of the MLB, when they face Toronto Blue Jays.
The 28-year-old Dominican will do drums and receive pitches from Gerrit Cole, who will open the game for the New York team. Kyle Higashioka was the other candidate to fill that spot, but Boone confirmed that he hopes to see Sanchez.
The Dominican had a very deteriorated performance during the 2020 campaign, but he showed much better in Spring Training and the Yankees helmsman trusts him again for the start of a new season.
This will be Sánchez’s seventh season in the Major Leagues and always with the New York franchise, in which he debuted in 2015. Since then, the Dominican has achieved a .236 batting percentage with 366 hits, 115 home runs and 286 runs. RBIs in 421 games.
