According to the Health Library, cataract means a condition where the lens of the eye is clouded and transmits light poorly. If the vision has deteriorated so much that it is a substantial inconvenience, cataracts can be treated with surgery. During the operation, the lens of the eye, or the pupil, is removed, and an artificial pupil is placed in its place.

Cataracts are a particularly common problem in people over 65 years of age, of whom more than 30 percent have a cataract change that impairs vision.
