Director Resigns Following Complaints from Parents After Students in Florida Viewed Famous Statue “David”

The famous 5.17 meter tall statue, created in the early 16th century, depicts a completely naked man named David. He is a biblical character who killed the giant Goliath in a duel with a sling.

The lesson was taught to 11- and 12-year-old children. They were also told about Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam” and Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus”.

One of the children’s parents complained that the material was pornographic, while two others indicated that they would have liked to have known about such a lesson before it was taught.

Tallahassee Classical School Principal Hope Karaskill, who had been in the position for less than a year, said she resigned after the school board gave her an ultimatum to resign or be fired.

Local media reported that Karaskila did not know the reason she was asked to resign, but believed it was related to complaints about the hour.

The chairman of the school board, Barney Bishop, stated that last year the principal sent a notice to the parents, warning that the students would be shown the statue of Michelangelo “David”, but this year it was not done.

He called it a “gross mistake” and said “parents have a right to know anytime their children are being taught a controversial topic and image.”

“We’re not going to show the full statue of David to kindergartners. We’re not going to show him to second graders. There’s a certain age to show the full statue of David. We’ll figure out when that is,” Bishop said.

On Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis moved to expand a law that bans the teaching of sex education in public schools. Teachers who violate the law face suspension or loss of their teaching license.
