Director Daniel Espinosa admits he remains proud of Morbius although his film received a lot of bad reviews. Espinosa also revealed that he is often self-critical.
“Listen, I have a lot of self-hatred so I have a lot of criticism of my own work. I’m always trying to focus on getting better,” Espinosa told Insider, quoted from Variety which was released on Tuesday (5/4) US time.
“However, I am also proud of what I do. There are parts of my films that I am very proud of,” he continued.
The director then told about the experience of working on his first feature-length film titled Babylon Disease. At that time, Espinosa had received criticism from someone on the train about what was wrong with the film.
“Someone nudged me on the train and said, ‘I have to tell you what’s wrong with the second scene in your movie,’ and I was like, ‘Okay, okay,'” Espinosa said.
Morbius recorded only received a rating of 16 percent from 204 reviews on the aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film, starring Jared Leto, got a pretty good audience score with a figure of 70 percent.
The Espinosa-directed film also recorded a mediocre box office debut with US$39.1 million or around Rp561 billion (US$1=Rp14,368). The revenue was earned during the weekend of the premiere of Morbius.
Morbius is adapted from the Marvel comics created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane in 1971. The film follows the story of Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), a biochemist who searches for a cure for his rare blood disease.
However, Morbius’ life changes when he injects a serum containing the blood of a vampire bat. He became a figure resembling a bloodthirsty vampire.
Apart from Jared Leto, this film also stars a number of other actors and actresses. Call it Matt Smith as Milo the main villain, Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Jared Harris as Nicolas, and Tyrese Gibson as FBI agent Simon Stroud.
Morbius has been in theaters since March 30, 2022.
