NiAfter the show at Tagore, the delegates brought the director of the Uzbek film ‘Sunday’ to the stage with a standing ovation. The film, which tells the story of an elderly couple grappling with generational change, was one of the best films of the festival. The delegates were thrilled to interact with director Shokhir Kholikov after the screening. Although the audience spoke enthusiastically about the film, the director was a bit of a curmudgeon. Language is the problem. He could not follow the delegates’ questions in English properly. With the help of the host on the stage, he communicated fluently in English. The delegates also waited for his words with full support.
Suddenly there was a movie style entry! Russian language rang out from the audience. Shokhir searched for Kholikov, glad to hear the language he knew so well. It was Nikola Komarov, a Russian who came to the fair. Russian is also a well-known language for Uzbeks. The director of ‘Sunday’ sighed and smiled like a Malayali who hears his own language when he arrives in a foreign country. The audience burst into applause as the two started talking in Russian. The director answered Nicola’s questions without hesitation. Nicola translated her question and the director’s response for the delegates. With this the delegates interacted with the director with his help.
