Director of public health calls for vaccination in cases of Covid-19

Charlotte.- The Mecklenburg County Health Department asked the population to get vaccinated in response to the increase in Covid-19 infections during the summer.

At a press conference, the agency provided details about the autumn vaccination campaign, which seeks to prevent health problems caused by respiratory diseases.

To this end, Reynard Washington, director of the Mecklenburg Department of Health, shared information on Covid-19 cases recorded in the summer.

In an online press conference, the official shared information about Covid-19 vaccines.

Increase in cases and prevention

The official noted that unlike in previous years, the number of reported cases by 2024 will not decrease sufficiently during the hot season.

In addition, during monitoring of the viral load in the sewage system and the number of hospitalizations, the presence of Covid-19 showed an increasing trend.

Even this summer, deaths from complications of the virus have been reported in North Carolina, with at least one confirmed in Mecklenburg.

This is why Washington has urged the population to take preventive measures before the cold season, since this is when Covid-19 cases are most common.

In addition to vaccines, he recalled the need to take basic measures to avoid infections, such as:

  • Wash your hands constantly and avoid touching your face.
  • If you have symptoms such as fatigue, headache, body aches or sore throat, stay at home.
  • Avoid crowded places.
  • Wear masks due to risk of infection.

Find your vaccines

Like health departments in every other county in North Carolina, Mecklenburg offers a variety of vaccines, some at no cost even to people without health insurance.

During the press conference, Washington explained that the 2024 vaccination campaign will not have federal support, unlike when the emergency was declared due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Due to the lack of federal support, the county said it will make efforts to offer vaccines to everyone.

He explained that for now, this year in Charlotte there will be free Covid-19 vaccines for people without health insurance, but in limited numbers.

However, he stressed that this sector of the population will be the only one affected by the reduction in funding, since other groups such as minors will be guaranteed vaccines, also free of charge.

The official said they plan to receive the new vaccines in the second half of September, and therefore asked the population to take advantage of the vaccines in commercial pharmacies.

Pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens already have the updated Covid-19 vaccine, at a cost and for people with health insurance.

Check the vaccination sites on the map that shows the nearest options at commercial pharmacies. For each county health department, those interested can call for information about vaccinations.
