Director Norman Jewison, Legend of 20th Century Cinema, Dies at 97

Jewison belonged according to Reuters among the most important directors of the last four decades of the 20th century. The Toronto native was praised for the ease with which he could move between genres such as musical, romantic comedy or political thriller.

The 1967 drama In the Heat of the Night, starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger, won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. His film Fiddler on the Roof from 1971 won three statuettes. Jewison himself received a lifetime achievement Oscar in 1999.

His other notable works include the provocative rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar from 1973 and the film Under the Influence of the Full Moon, which was one of the most popular Hollywood romantic comedies at the turn of the 80s and 90s.

According to Sanderson, Jewison died Saturday at his home. The publicist did not provide further information.
