The French international documentary film festival “Fipadoc” will show the documentary film “Sisters of Ilģuciem” directed by Elita Kļaviņa today, LETA agency was informed by the representative of the filmmakers, Antra Gaile.
She said that the “Fipadoc” taking place in the French city of Biarritz is the first major international documentary film festival of the year, where the film “The Sisters of Ilģuciem” will have its French premiere. The film, together with nine other documentaries, is included in the “Focus on the Baltic States and Finland” program.
Also, the director’s film will be screened at the Trieste festival. It is the largest Italian festival of those focusing on Central and Eastern European cinema.
In Trieste, “The Sisters of Iļguciema” will have its Italian premiere and is the only Latvian film out of 11 films in the documentary competition. The screening of the film with the participation of director Kļaviņa and producer Gaile will take place on Wednesday, January 25.
Between the two festival screenings, the film “Iļguciema māsas” can be seen on Tuesday, January 24, in the New Riga Theater project “I return from afar”, in the first part of which Kļaviņa plays the main role in the stage version of the play of the same name, while in the second part the film is screened.
It takes place in Iļguciems women’s prison, where female prisoners, performing Chekhov’s “Three Sisters” in a theater studio together with professional actors, reveal their poignant life stories and talk about their hopes and longings for humane treatment outside the prison walls, Gaile pointed out.
She noted that “Iļguciem’s Sisters” is the second full-length documentary of the actress and director Kļaviņa. The film “Zorjana Horobraja” was her diploma thesis at the National Film School of the Latvian Academy of Culture and won the National Cinema Award “Lielais Kristaps 2019” as the best student film.
The creative team of “Iļguciema māsu” includes director Kļaviņa, chief cameraman Baiba Kļava, editing director Sandra Alksne, sound director Anrijs Krenbergs, composer Kārlis Auzāns, producers Gaile, Līga Gaisa, Kļaviņa.
