Director Kevin Smith Opens Up About Childhood Trauma and Seeking Treatment for Mental Health

In a revealing interview with People, Kevin Smith, the director of “Clerks,” speaks candidly about his recent treatment for mental health issues. Smith checked himself into Arizona’s Sierra Tucson center earlier this year after experiencing a “complete break from reality.” This incident prompted him to seek help, and through therapy, he was able to confront his childhood traumas of sexual abuse and body shaming, which he believes led to the development of a persona he refers to as “the other guy.” Smith’s therapist helped him uncover the deep impact of his experiences, including how the sexual abuse likely inspired him to become a director, a job where he can maintain control. Body shaming, on the other hand, led to his body dysmorphia and codependency issues and made him into a “people pleaser” who sought to distract and entertain others to avoid his own feelings of worthlessness. Smith’s journey of healing included various practices such as mindfulness, breath work exercises, and cutting back on social media, marijuana use, and work. Though he was initially apprehensive about opening up publicly, he hopes that by sharing his story, he can help others who are struggling with mental health issues. For anyone in need of help, the Crisis Text Line can be reached by texting “STRENGTH” to 741-741, and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be called by dialing 988.
