Director Jan Hřebejk Reveals Details of Famous ‘Pelíška’ Movie Scene from 1999

Many of us can’t even imagine Christmas without the movie Beds. Director Jan Hřebejk (56) has now revealed details about one of the most famous scenes of this film.

The roar of aircraft engines shakes the whole house, the grandmother embodied by Stella Zázvorková picks up the phone. Anyone who knows the film Pelíška knows very well what it is about. The movie heroes just registered that in August 1968, the troops of the Soviet Union and other countries of the so-called eastern flank invaded Czechoslovakia.

“Guys, you idiots, turn on the radio,” shouts an indignant Zázvorková at her fellow actors Bolek Polívka (74) and Miroslav Donutil (72). Even though the famous film was filmed according to Petr Šabach’s design already in 1999, people are still interested in how the famous comedy was created.

And although one audience question about the invasion scene came during this year’s Christmas, director Jan Hřebejk responded quickly.

“Ms. Zázvorková remembered it all well. She also liked Bolko with Mirek and Simona, they played well together. The August night was not described in full detail in the script, and the actors, witnesses, cameraman and assistant director were involved in the creation,” said the famous filmmaker on the X network.

He did not forget to pay his respects to Stella Zázvorková (†83) on that occasion. “Most of all, she was a great actress,” added Hřebejk.

The funeral of the frontman of the band Hundred Animals. I thought it was a joke, said Hřebejk (8/2023):
