As early as 1993, James Redford underwent a successful liver transplant and founded his own organization to help other patients. He also produced The Kindness of Strangers, which focused on organ donors.

He himself has directed nine documentaries, often focusing on environmental issues and education. These included The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia and Happening: A Clean Energy Revolution.

He also wrote the screenplay for The Circle of Fire, a cowboy romance with Kiefer Sutherland and Daryl Hannah, and directed the little-known drama Spin with Stanley Tucci. In 2005, he and his father, Robert, founded The Redford Center, a non-profit organization that helped produce environmental films and awarded grants.
