The Tunisian presidency announced, on Friday evening, the termination of the duties of the Director General of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company.
A post by the Tunisian presidency on its official Facebook account said: “The President of the Republic, Kais Saied, decided to terminate the duties of the President and Director General of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company, Hisham Annan, and appoint Faisal Trifa as his successor.”
The electricity supply in Tunisia was suddenly cut off from all regions of the country for about three hours due to a malfunction in one of the generators in the capital, according to what the electricity company reported last Wednesday.
The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company said in a statement that the cause of the outage was “a direct and emergency damage to one of the main generators in the capital.”
The director of cooperation and communication at the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company, Mounir Al-Ghabiri, confirmed at the time that the power outage had affected the entire country.
Al-Ghabri added in a post on his Facebook account that the reasons are still unknown.
He pointed out that there is no truth to what is being said about an explosion at the Rades station, stressing that the technical teams are working to restore electricity.
General power outages rarely occur throughout Tunisia.
This summer, due to a heat wave that exceeded 45 degrees, the authorities implemented electricity rationing measures for short periods, each time affecting an area witnessing large energy consumption.
