Director Andreas Kopriva Makes Feature Film Debut with “Hades”, Based on Real-Life Viennese Underworld Figure

Reza, who comes from Iran, got on the wrong track as a child and later became a big player in the Viennese underworld. His life is the subject of the film “Hades”, with which director Andreas Kopriva (59), who grew up in Krems, is celebrating his feature film debut.

Kopriva with 15 years of directing experience

In the “almost true story,” Kopriva paints a picture of a crook who, despite all the brutality of the underworld, also has a sense of honor. Kopriva, who studied with Axel Corti at the Vienna Film Academy, has already worked on numerous films and can look back on a wealth of almost 15 years of experience as a director, for example in ORF series and films (“Four Women and a Funeral”) , crime scene).

“The story should also be touching!”

“Hades” is a mix of action, love story and comedy – a “dramedy” according to Kopriva – that appeals to a wide audience. “Reza shouldn’t be the superhero,” says the director when asked whether he portrays the main actor too positively. “I certainly took the story more seriously than it was portrayed in the book; the humor may have become drier,” he says. “But the story should also be touching. With everything bad that Reza does, you should feel sorry if he gets arrested.”

A good gut feeling helped with the decision

How did Kopriva come up with the material? “The film came to me,” he says, pleased that MR Film asked him whether he would direct it and thus make his debut in the “supreme discipline” of cinema. “What’s important to me is my gut feeling; I can only commit to a plot if I can connect emotionally with it.” Test shots with the main actor followed before it was clear that “Hades” would be made. The former Kremser, who now lives in Purkersdorf, was able to put together his team himself. “Making a film is always a team effort, that’s the great thing. Many creative people implement visions together.” What’s special about the cinema: “People are used to the highest quality – in terms of images, equipment, costumes. And often the following applies: less is more.”

It took two years until the financing (Film Institute, ORF, State of Lower Austria) was in place, then the plot had to be tightened (shortened). The result can be seen. Now there is great hope for many viewers.
