Srnec, who was born on August 29, 1931 in Žalov, graduated from the DAMU Conservatory and Puppetry, as well as a graphic school. He founded his Black Theater in the early 1960s. He was the creator of productions such as Striped Dream, Legends of the Old Mother of Prague, Alice in the Realm of Miracles, Peter Pan, Labyrinth, Dream Week and White Pierot in Black.

The biggest turning point in his career was the year 1962, when an unknown theater ensemble from Czechoslovakia was invited to a prestigious festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. The seven-member theater celebrated great success there.

But he also collaborated with the Semafor Theater, Laterna magika, the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theater and the Munich State Opera. In 1989, he founded the ensemble Imaginativ Praha.

In 2011, he received the Medal of Merit from the then President Václav Klaus.

In 2018, he received the Thalia Award 2017 for extraordinary artistic contribution to Czech theatrical art.

With his wife, dancer and actress Dana Srncová, they had three children, Jiří, Adéla and Anna.
