Director Ali Abbasi doesn’t feel “at home in Iranian cinema”
Iranian director Ali Abbasi revealed during the Cannes Film Festival that he “doesn’t feel at home” in his home country’s cinema – although he looks up to many directors from there. In an interview he gives an explanation as well as his own definition of filmmaking.

Cannes.The Iranian director Ali Abbasi doesn’t know much about the cinema tradition of his home country. Even if he looks up to many directors from there, he “does not feel at home in Iranian cinema,” said the 41-year-old on Monday in Cannes. “And that’s because it’s all so damn metaphorical. There’s always a flower in the wind that’s supposed to be a symbol of some damn thing.” His definition of filmmaking: “I think a movie is a slap in the face, it’s not a damn bouquet.”
