MÁLAGA, 14 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Provincial Council will support the Proteo bookstore with the purchase of books for public libraries in small municipalities. This has been announced by the president of the Malaga Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, who has highlighted the numerous expressions of affection from the people of Malaga towards the emblematic bookstore, which caught fire last week, and has added his support and that of the provincial entity to the solidarity movement that is touring not only the province of Malaga, but the whole country, with the hashtag # MalagaconProteo.
Thus, the Diputación de Málaga will allocate 6,000 euros to the purchase of copies of Ediciones del Genal, the publisher of the Proteo bookstore, to send them to the public libraries of the 87 Malaga municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants.
They will be works by authors from Malaga or closely linked to Malaga, since Ediciones del Genal, which owes its name to the river and the Genal valley, was born with the aim of promoting Malaga culture, supporting local authors and providing interested readers in Malaga a source of quality publications.
This same week the last two publications of this publishing house were presented at the MVA Cultural Center: the poetry books ‘Economic Hymn’ by Raúl López Cobo and ‘Las sergas de Rouger’ by Francisco Fortuny. These two publications will be included in the catalog of books that the Provincial Council will acquire for the libraries of the province.
‘THAT THAT DOES NOT BURN’ IN THE CC LA MALAGUETA
Added to this initiative to support the bookstore is the act that is being held this Friday at the La Malagueta Cultural Center, where representatives of the sector, associations and cultural entities meet.
The act, baptized as ‘That which does not burn’, aims to vindicate what unites all booksellers, from the dissemination of culture to their ability to make a city, that is, to value everything that will survive any fire: that that does not burn. The event is part of the activities of the SUR Culture Classroom and can be followed at sur.es.
The Proteo bookstore opened its doors in 1967, and in 2017 it was recognized as the Best Cultural Bookstore in Spain. In 1993 Ediciones del Genal was born, an editorial project whose name is a tribute to the river and the Genal valley.
Until 2013, Ediciones del Genal had a very selective publishing profile, with few high-circulation publications. The copies were dedicated both to direct sale in bookstores, as well as to distribution or as gifts to customers of the Prometheus and Proteus bookstores.
The serious crisis in the bookseller world forced the publisher to rethink its trajectory, combining bookstore services with publishing and desktop publishing, offering layout, correction, cover creation, promotion, and presentation services, among others. Through Ediciones del Genal, many authors have found an affordable opportunity to publish their works.
