Diponegoro Military Commander Asks for Suharto’s Great Service to be Respected

Semarang, CNN Indonesia

Commander of the IV/Diponegoro Military Region Command Major General TNI Rudianto mentioning the second President of the Republic of Indonesia Suharto must be respected.

“He did a great service to Indonesia. We shouldn’t look at it (the past). Seeing it is history, all Indonesian leaders have contributed. If there were no predecessors, we wouldn’t be like this. There’s no need to worry about problems that don’t need to be disputed, ” he said, after the 76th TNI Anniversary ceremony at Makodam IV/Diponegoro, Watugong, Semarang, Tuesday (5/10).

Rudianto also took the time to make a pilgrimage to his grave at Astana Giri Bangun, Karanganyar Regency, Monday (4/10).

Accompanied by the Central Java Regional Police Chief Inspector General of Police Ahmad Luthfi, Rudianto also made a pilgrimage to the grave of the Great Commander General Sudirman in Yogyakarta.

“Nyekar is a tradition from before. So all of our Presidents of Indonesia make a pilgrimage, there is no politics or anything. It’s a hereditary tradition that every TNI Anniversary we make a pilgrimage to the place of the former Indonesian President who died, the second to the place of Panglima Besar Soedirman”, added Rudianto.

Previously, the figure of Suharto was mentioned in an unproven statement from former TNI Commander Gatot Nurmantyo. He threw the issue that communist ideology had entered the military so that many statues of Suharto in several places were missing.

In fact, the statue is still standing strong in a number of places, such as in the HM Soeharto Museum, Argomulyo, Sedayu, Bantul, DIY.

In the New Order’s version of history, Suharto, who claimed to be the ‘Father of Development’, was considered the central figure in exterminating the PKI.

However, some historians and later foreign intelligence documents say that ‘the smiling general’ took advantage of the momentum of the rebellion to take power.
