Tougher sanctions – EU response to Aliaksandr Lukashenko’s migrant crisis at the Polish-Lithuanian-Latvian border.
According to Reuters, the extension of the economic sanctions adopted in July is being considered, as well as the introduction of new ones for Belarusian airlines involved in smuggling migrants to Minsk.
“The legal environment is currently being finalized and the criteria for including both individuals and companies in the list of sanctions are being expanded. I think that we will finish dealing with that legal environment very soon, because there is understanding and consensus, ”said the Ambassador General of the EU Simonas Šatūnas to the LRT.
Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, whose institution has been actively involved in the planning and implementation of illegal migration, is also said to have been targeted by EU sanctions on Belarus.
