German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes diplomatic efforts are needed to end the war in Ukraine. In an interview with German television channel ZDF, he commented on the importance of the consultations in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which took place at the beginning of the month. There, the representatives of more than 40 countries, but not Russia, discussed various ideas, including the Ukrainian proposal to resolve the conflict.
In the interview, Chancellor Scholz specifically noted the fact that, in addition to Latin American and African countries, China also participated in the negotiations in Saudi Arabia. According to him, this is an important factor in finding a peaceful solution. He said the talks must continue as they increase the pressure on Russia to realize that it has gone down the wrong path and that it must withdraw its troops and make peace possible.
At the same time, Ukraine continues to put pressure on the German government to provide Kiev with German Taurus cruise missiles, the DPA agency reported, as quoted by BNR.
In Germany, the pressure on Chancellor Olaf Scholz on this matter has increased recently, DPA points out. Politicians from the ruling parties and the opposition have demanded that the Ukrainian armed forces be provided with a weapon system suitable for destroying bunkers and protected command posts at a distance of up to 500 kilometers.
