Jakarta –
Police forcefully entered the Embassy Mexico in Quito and arrested the former Vice President Ecuador Jorge Glas. As a result of this invasion, a number of Latin American countries criticized Ecuador.
An Ecuadorian police operation at the Mexican Embassy in Quito occurred on Friday (5/4) causing Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to immediately sever diplomatic relations with Ecuador over what he called a “flagrant violation of international law and Mexican sovereignty.”
A number of leaders of Latin American countries have unanimously opposed the raid carried out by Ecuadorian police on the Mexican Embassy. The vote of opposition was delivered on Friday evening.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric voiced support for Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Boric expressed “deep concern” about violations of the right to asylum, citing the Convention on Diplomatic Relations, in force since 1961, which stipulates the inviolability of mission premises and that “state agents” of the receiving State may not enter them without consent.”
Colombian President Gustavo Petro also spoke about the diplomatic crisis between Ecuador and Mexico, saying his country would push for action by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in support of Glas, who has been in the Mexican Embassy since December 17 and whose “right to asylum was violated by barbaric way.”
Colombia’s Foreign Ministry has asked Honduras, which currently serves as interim president of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, to convene an extraordinary meeting to address the issue.
Venezuela also criticized the Ecuadorian government’s operation at the Mexican Embassy.
“With a lack of humility and common sense on the part of the Ecuadorian government, we warn governments around the world of the possible emergence of an era of terror in Ecuador, in which neofascism as an extreme and totalitarian ideology will materialize,” added Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s government.
“We urge the international community to take action against these despicable acts that threaten America’s integrity and stability,” Maduro said.
Furthermore, the Presidents of Brazil, Honduras, Bolivia and Argentina expressed regret over the Ecuadorian government’s decision.
Most recently, Nicaragua cut all diplomatic relations with Ecuador. Nicaragua considers the invasion a reprehensible act.
“In the face of such an unusual and reprehensible act… our firm, irrevocable rejection, which we transformed into a Sovereign Decree to sever all diplomatic relations with the government of Ecuador,” Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega’s government said in a statement, a day after raid, reported by Anadolu, Sunday (7/4/2024).
Nicaragua expressed its solidarity and support for the Mexican government.
“Our solidarity and support, in any legal action that may arise as a result of this, is with the President and the Government of Mexico,” the statement said.
