Diplomatic crisis and international scandal mark Ecuador – 2024-04-15 08:07:07

Quito/Prensa Latina

The raid on the Mexican embassy in the capital of Ecuador, which culminated in the capture of former Vice President Jorge Glas, continued to generate international rejection during this week that ends here today.

Meanwhile, the diplomatic crisis between both countries worsened after the Mexican government denounced this South American nation before the International Court and requested its separation from the United Nations (UN).

In the midst of this context, the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, stated that an apology to Mexico was not on the table at this time, despite the rejection of the international community at what they consider an invasion of the diplomatic legation.

In international forums we are going to enforce our version of the events, declared this Wednesday the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility.

The chancellor, together with the Minister of the Interior Mónica Palencia and the head of Defense Gian Carlo Loffredo, went to the National Assembly (Parliament) to report on the violent invasion of the Mexican embassy.

Amid discussions and disagreements between legislators, the session was suspended.

For assembly member Viviana Veloz, leader of the Citizen Revolution (RC) bench, the ministers do not want to be held accountable for what happened last Friday at the diplomatic headquarters and rejected the fact that the session has been declared reserved.

By the way, the RC movement announced that it would officially register with the National Electoral Council (CNE) as a political opposition in Ecuador.

Meanwhile, the court of the National Court of Justice of Ecuador that analyzed the habeas corpus of former Vice President Glas determined this Friday that his detention in the Mexican embassy was arbitrary and illegal; however, he will continue to be imprisoned.

In the ruling, the court headed by Judge Mónica Heredia indicated that the arrest of the former vice president at the diplomatic headquarters occurred without a search warrant, making it an unlawful detention, which is not justified by the decree of internal armed conflict.

“It is arbitrary,” stressed the magistrate, who immediately specified that he would still not be released from prison because two final sentences weigh on him.

The former official, who is on a hunger strike and appeared at the session online from prison, asked the court to return his asylum status, while representatives of the Government spoke out against that possibility due to the sentences against him.

Glas, considered one of the symbols of “lawfare” in Ecuador, temporarily received the benefit of pre-release on November 28, 2022, after the unification of two prison sentences of six and eight years for the Odebrecht and Bribery cases. ; However, the measure was revoked.

In December 2023, faced with what he considered a new judicial attack, he sought refuge in the Mexican embassy, where he stayed until he received asylum and was captured by law enforcement exactly a week ago.

At the beginning of this year, the justice system ordered his arrest for alleged embezzlement in the case called Reconstruction of Manabí, which investigates alleged embezzlement in public works after the 2016 earthquake.
