The Minister of Sports, Mr. Oswald HOMEKY and his counterpart from the Russian Federation, Oleg MATYTSIN, proceeded, on behalf of their respective countries, to the signing of a partnership agreement. This is a Memorandum of Understanding between the two nations to materialize cooperation and training in the field of sports and physical education for Benin. It was Tuesday, April 25, 2023 in the yellow river room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This signature comes within the framework of the working visit to Benin of the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation.

Happy to see a partnership formalized, for the Russian Minister of Sports, Mr. Oleg MATYTSIN, “it is a very important step that Benin and Russia have just taken. We will cooperate in the field of sport and physical culture. Sport is a force that unites us all. It is also the will of President Vladimir PUTIN who recently signed a concept document in this direction”. He said that sport is a uniting force. “If we speak the language of diplomacy, sport is the ambassador of peace… Today we see that there is some turbulence in international relations. So by signing this kind of Memorandum, we are making the world more stable.”
Mr. Oswald HOMEKY, for his part, said he was happy to know that the action carried out humbly by the government of President Patrice TALON, aroused interest among major nations such as Russia. He added that “the signing of this Memorandum is a founding act which for us is the start of a journey that we must take together. Benin is a country full of talents in all of our 77 municipalities and also within the diaspora… I am happy that the Memorandum that we have signed mainly includes the aspects of cooperation, with regard to training as well as cooperation between the different sports associations. It is a pleasure to have you by our side”.
The guest of Minister Oswald HOMEKY then visited the General Mathieu KEREKOU stadium where he saw the jewel, object of all desires in the sub-region. It was in Grand-Popo, 70 km from Cotonou, that the Russian Sports Minister, Oleg MATYTSIN ended his journey. He appreciated the Grand-Popo stadium which hosts the matches of the Beninese football championship, a stadium built as part of the project of 22 stadiums in our countries.
It should be remembered that this is the first time that a Russian Minister of Sports has set foot on Beninese soil.
