Beninese President Patrice Talon was on a “working visit” to the Elysee Palace to meet his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday March 8. This meeting focused on strengthening economic ties between France and Benin as well as cultural cooperation projects between the two countries.
During this meeting, the two leaders also discussed the issue of the fight against terrorism, a crucial issue for Benin and the entire Sahel region. The Beninese President expressed his concerns about the security situation in his country and expressed the need for support in terms of equipment for the Beninese army in order to strengthen the fight against terrorism. This visit comes after a televised intervention by Patrice Talon on the French channel LCI, in which he was impartial on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and congratulated China, which according to him inspired him. On the issue of terrorism, the President of Benin expressed his position on the actions of the private military company Wagner, affirming that he was not against their intervention if its purpose was to “restore peace and fight against the terrorism”.
This meeting between the two leaders comes in the context of close relations between France and Benin, a relationship that dates back several decades. France is one of Benin’s privileged partners. In recent years after the tensions in 2019, France has emerged as a key ally of Benin in the sub-region. The two countries have relaunched many projects, especially cultural and economic, before defining a new security policy after Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Benin. In this context, Patrice Talon’s visit to the Elysée takes on an important political dimension, as it reaffirms the solidity of the ties between the two countries. Above all, it makes it possible to address security issues in the Sahel region and to strengthen cooperation between France and Benin in this crucial area.
