Diphtheria Outbreak in Gresik Regency Sparks Concern and Urgent Response

JawaPos.com – Two cases of diphtheria appeared in Gresik Regency. The infectious disease that infects the nose and throat has attacked residents of Suci Village, Manyar and Sukowati Village, Bungah.

The Health Office of the Gresik Regency Government issued an extraordinary incident letter (KLB). The diphtheria case was experienced by a 3-year-old child from Sukowati Village, Bungah. The health office team immediately identified the child’s risk factors. There is one factor, namely a history of refusing immunization.

“Other factors, such as a history of out-of-town travel or contact with patients, are absent,” said the Head of the Gresik Regency Health Office, Mukhibatul Khusna.

The patient was handled at the Ibnu Sina Hospital. Currently his condition has shown good progress. ”The patient is still being treated at the hospital,” he added.

Diphtheria cases were also found in Suci Village, Manyar. A 52 year old man was exposed to diphtheria. The difference is that he has no history of travel outside the city or contact with diphtheria patients.

”Same, this patient’s condition has also improved,” he said.

Diphtheria is an infectious disease that is dangerous and can be life threatening. If left untreated, the Coryneba cterium diphtheria bacterium can release toxins that damage the heart, kidneys and brain.

Diphtheria can spread from person to person. Transmission can occur when inhaling or swallowing splashes of liquid released by sufferers when coughing or sneezing.

In fact, transmission can also occur when touching objects that have been contaminated with patient fluids. Because of that, added Khusna, his party immediately established an outbreak for fast handling.

Namely, giving antidiphtheria serum (ADS) to patients. Then, to control the virus from spreading, the health office team conducted an epidemiological investigation (PE) and surveillance. “We have also treated all the close contacts concerned,” added the former head of the Sukomulyo Health Center.

Because they had established an outbreak, the Health Office carried out control in the two villages by carrying out ORI diphtheria mass immunization. It aims to break the chain of spread of the virus. Khusna asked the public not to panic.
