Diocese of Montauban’s 2021 Accounts: Surplus, Legacy, and Debts

In 2019, the left-wing press was a lot of noise about the brutal dismissal of nine of the 23 lay employees of the diocese of Montauban, which highlighted the need for recovery after having had a deficit of 400,000 euros.

We learn from the 2021 diocesan accounts of the diocese of Montauban, which have just been published, that the three employees who had attacked the diocese at the prud’hommes were dismissed. They appealed.

In addition, in 2021 the diocese generates a surplus of 306,392 euros with a budget of 8.3 million euros; there are 24 parishes and 7 services – including the new personal parish of Gasseras. Today there is a manager and 8 full-time employees (page 31) – the diocese has tightened its payroll, unlike many other small dioceses which still have 15 to 20 (or even more) full-time equivalents.

Two legacies were accepted by the diocese for the year, one of which should be used half to renovate the diocesan retirement home and the other to train seminarians.

The diocese has 176,000 euros in debt with credit organizations – including 32,000 euros to be repaid within the year, 300,000 euros of “miscellaneous debts” and 398,356 euros “other debts” (page 28), and has provisioned 270,000 euros for risks and charges. We learn from page 31 that a loan is secured by a first mortgage on a property located at 4501 chemin de Lebrat in Montauban – which corresponds to the Saint-Martial church and its presbytery.
