Dīnvydlatgolys stuosti: New Book by Valentin Lukašević and Its Impact on Latgalian Literature

The book “Dīnvydlatgolys stuosti” by literary scholar and writer Valentin Lukašević has been published. In those 39 stories, the author, traveling not only in space, but also in time, introduces the southern part of Latgale, asking – is it possible to live without a place and is there a place even if no one lives there?

Valentin Lukaševičs is a poet, literary scholar, writer, scriptwriter and regional researcher. Co-author of the first Latgalian postmodern novels “Seppuku iz saulis vādara” (1995) and “Valerjana dzeive i redzini” (1996), published the poetry tetralogy “Ceļš” (2005–2020), author of articles in the newspaper “Latgales Laiks” for the series of articles “Latgalīšu Gazeta” and for “A12” magazine.

His last contribution to the field of Latgalian literature is the collection of essays “Casnāgu maizeitis” (2022), which received the “Boņuks 2022” Latgalian annual culture award. The author has always liked to tell about people and places that are not often reproduced. His nature as a local researcher and researcher was also wonderfully revealed in the LTV1 program “Cytaidi latviskais” hosted by Valentina.

In the Latgalian literary program “Puslopys” it was once said about Valentin Lukašević: “With Valentin Lukašević’s tuost, you can wade through the streets of Latgolys with leluokus and mozuokus”. This time, in 39 stories, the author “walks” the settlements of the southern part of Latgale from Nauļani to Madaliņa, the texts, which are written in the Latgalian language, are supplemented with rich illustrations – historical photos, documents, maps, portraits and landscapes. The stories were written from 2016 to 2023 and were periodically published in the magazine “A12” and the newspaper “Latgales Laiks”.

The book’s editor and writer Ilze Sperga says the following about the collection: “In this book, Valentin Lukašević shows his Latgali to others – traveling not only in space, but also in time and telling about places and people that often no longer exist and only legends, stories and old engravings, records in archives and newspapers of the time. The book is the author’s love story, in which he confesses how important this part of the world is to him: “Grybu atzazeit sovă lovesteiba! From there bezlepilpilsäuta Latgol, from there the kolnainuos and azarainuos zemis plekeiti, which the four governors could byut Pīdruja, Izvolts, Rušyuna and Škaune. Iz itū kai ba vysod oblivion to the wind, which fascinates me with its hollow, viesturi i cylvākim.”

His Latgale is, it seems, such a narrow and small corner of the world, but it has so many stories and stopping points. From legends of the past to still-existing signs of a bygone era that can still be found today. Read the short stories of these places, and the known and forgotten places will reveal themselves in a completely different way.”
