In an amusing video, Grigor Dimitrov, Stefanos Tsitsipas and other players make fun of the extinction of their species with a one-handed backhand.
What do Grigor Dimitrov, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Lorenzo Musetti have in common? They are currently in the top 20 and play with a one-handed backhand. The fact that three players with a one-handed backhand are placed high in the ATP rankings could soon be a thing of the past. Because fewer and fewer players under 25 are one-handed players. In February 2024, something unique even occurred. For the first time in the more than 50-year history of the world rankings, only players with a two-handed backhand were in the top 10.
“An artist cannot create true art with two hands”
The result: media eulogies for the elegant one-handed backhand. The fact that one-handers will soon no longer be competitive has prompted the remaining top players with a one-handed backhand to retrain and do everything with two hands from now on. In an amusing video from the ATP, Grigor Dimitrov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Stan Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem, Lorenzo Musetti, Denis Shapovalov, Christopher Eubanks, Daniel Evans and Richard Gasquet can be seen brushing their teeth, eating, drawing or playing darts with both hands. Dominic Thiem sums up the essence of trying to do everything with both hands: “An artist cannot create true art with two damn hands.”
At the end of the video, there is a funny scene when Dimitrov receives a call from Roger Federer – with the ringtone “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” by the band Chicago. This is exactly the song that the so-called One Handed Bakchand Boys, consisting of Federer, Dimitrov and Tommy Haas, performed at the tournament in Indian Wells in 2017 – at a time when the one-handed backhand was still popular.
