The Region of Thessaly, with the aim of effectively protecting the region from extreme weather phenomena, is proceeding with the implementation of important flood prevention projects in a total of 432 places. These interventions, with a total budget of 75,704,711.26 euros, are part of a wider strategic plan to strengthen the resilience of the region against the frequent and catastrophic floods that affect Thessaly. This plan was presented by the Regional Governor of Thessaly, Dimitris Kouretas, during the event on “Strategic Plan for the Reconstruction of Thessaly – Dams, Infrastructure and Hydrology Projects”, which took place in Nice.

New Projects: Starting the New Year with a Dynamic Intervention

As of September 1, the Region of Thessaly began the implementation of new major flood prevention projects, which are divided into two categories: the cleaning of large rivers and the interventions per Regional Unit.

Cleaning of Great Rivers

In the first category, the projects concern the cleaning and restoration of parts of important rivers in the region. Specifically:

  • Enipea River: Cleaning and restoration of parts after the Daniel disaster, with a budget of 6 million euros.
  • Farsalitis River: Interventions in the Regional Units of Larissa and Karditsa, also with a budget of 6 million euros.
  • Pinios River: Cleaning and restoration of sections in the Larissa Regional Unit, budget 3 million euros.

Interventions by Regional Unit

In the second category, the projects include targeted interventions in each Regional Unit:

  • Karditsa: Cleaning of watercourses and techniques, restoration of lowland rivers and air bridges, with a budget of 6 million euros.
  • Larisa: Cleaning and restoration of streams in various municipalities, with a total budget of 6 million euros.
  • Magnesia and Sporades: Cleaning and restoration of streams in areas such as Platanias, Melani, and Holorema, with a budget of 7 million euros.
  • Trikala: Four major damage restoration projects in the Portaikos and Litheos rivers, with a budget of 8 million euros.

Strategy for the Future

With the new and implemented projects, the Region of Thessaly is expected to strengthen the resilience of the region against the intense weather phenomena that have affected Thessaly in recent years. District Governor Dimitris Kouretas emphasized that early intervention and continuous monitoring of the situation will be the keys to protecting citizens and their properties.
