Writer Tom Lanoye also thinks back to Jeroen Brouwers with admiration. “We are looking at a very penal and special writer’s life, which has made him one of the most important authors of recent times,” Lanoye told VRT NWS. “He was someone of the grand gesture, the clear language and – if necessary – the karwats.”
Lanoye is also inspired by Brouwers. “He is someone who shows what is possible with Dutch, if you want to write. In that sense he has inspired a lot of people.” According to Lanoye, Brouwers had “an incredible style and command of Dutch”.
“Jeroen Brouwers was a writer’s writer”, says Lanoye in “The Appointment”, “a writer that many writers loved.”
