London, May 31 (EFE).- Dimitar Berbatov (Blagoevgrad, 1981) trusts a lot in Harry Kane. He believes that, by staying in the Tottenham Hotspur, will not ruin his legacy in England and will give the ‘Spurs’ the title they have been craving for fifteen years. But he also warns: “If you leave, at Real Madridfor example, would be a great signing.”
The Bulgarian, who is the ambassador of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car company, sponsor of the Europa League, reviews with EFE the future of Kane, the present of José Mourinho, the ambition of the Manchester United to ruin the treble for their neighbors and the curse of Tottenham Hotspur.
Question: Who is your favorite for this Europa League final?
Answer: I would have liked him to win it Bayer Leverkusen or Manchester United, but now that they’re both eliminated I’m leaning towards Roma, because José Mourinho coaches them and he coached both United and Tottenham, two of my clubs. I hope to see an exciting match, but it’s a final and they tend to be boring, very boring, because the stakes are so high. You want to be safer and take fewer risks.
It is a 50% final.
Q: Does Mourinho want a boring game?
A: I think that every coach wants to win a final no matter how, because afterward the winner is that team, but they won’t remember how they played, only who was the champion.
Q: You have said that you prefer Mourinho because he coached Tottenham, but he doesn’t have good memories of the ‘Spurs’ because they sent him off before the final against City.
A: That is the most important reason. They threw him out a week before the League Cup final. When you do that to one of the best coaches in the world… It wasn’t a good thing for him, he wants to fight for finals, he was ready for that final and surely he knew how to win it. That’s why he’s hurt.
Q: Why does Mourinho never go out of style?
A: Mourinho is Mourinho, he is one of the best. He will never go out of style or stay out of football. He’s not going to have a bad season and he’s going to leave. He will always be there, because he has a lot to give to football. He is showing it with Roma, we are very lucky that he is still on the front line and winning. He teaches other coaches how to win titles.
Q: Is Sevilla’s supremacy in the Europa League comparable to that of Real Madrid in the Champions League?
A: It’s a fair comparison, because winning this competition six times and getting a chance for a seventh is an incredible achievement. I don’t know how they do it. It has a lot of merit and they have a lot of experience. Maybe that’s why people think they’re favourites, but in my opinion it’s 50/50.
Q: Changing to the Premier, you were in the squad that won the League Cup with Tottenham in 2008 -the last title for Spurs. What would you have thought if you were told at that time that Tottenham would go 15 years without winning a new trophy?
A: Phew, I scored in that final and it was incredible. We won at Chelsea, who had a great team, with Drogba, Lampard, Terry… After that game I thought that the ‘Spurs’ had a winning mentality and that they were going to start winning titles, but that didn’t happen. Fifteen years have passed, a long time, and there has not been another title. Everyone is aware of this and they are trying to achieve it. At some point they will, for sure. I don’t know when, but they have everything, a great stadium, Harry Kane and Heung-min They are like team leaders… The only thing they need is to win that trophy.
Q: He talks about Kane and it is increasingly difficult to justify his staying. Should I go?
A: His reputation and his legacy at Tottenham is so great now that I don’t think he’s going to go away. I think he’ll stay because he can’t afford to damage that and mess it up. When you think of ‘Spurs’, you think of Harry Kane, and when you say ‘Spurs’, you think of Harry Kane. He is the club’s all-time top scorer, breaking records every season… I don’t think he wants to break that and especially his relationship with the fans. I think he should stay and I’m sure that at some point they’ll win a title with him.
Q: Real Madrid could be one of the clubs interested in signing him, but there are doubts with a footballer who has never left the Premier, who is 30 years old, that it would cost more than 100 million…
A: The way Kane plays, he would be a great signing for any team in the world. I think that because of his legacy, he will stay here, but if he decided to leave, to Real Madrid, for example, he would be a great signing. Of course, it will cost a lot of money, because I know Daniel Levy and he will ask a lot for his star. It would be interesting to see it, because not many English players have left England, because the Premier League is probably the best league and everyone wants to be there.
Q: As a former United player, how important is it for United to screw up the treble against Manchester City?
A: That is the priority of the United players, they have to stop City and prevent them from getting that treble. Because everyone wants United to be the only Englishman to win the treble. They are capable of doing it, it will be a great final. I will be there supporting United and I hope they beat City.
Q: With the good season they’ve ended up having, did United make the right decision in getting rid of Cristiano Ronaldo?
A: When you have Cristiano on your team, one of the best in history, you have to know how to work with him, you have to know that he will always want to play. Because he is very ambitious, he always wants to start. If this doesn’t happen, you’re going to have problems, you’re going to have to sit down with him and talk about it and find a solution. In this case, the best solution was to part ways with him. I would have liked him to stay, because he can still score goals. But he makes me happy that he continues to play, having fun and scoring goals. He still has a couple of good years ahead of him.
